The strong increase in refugees from Ukraine in 2022/2023 for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, among others, is well known. The UNHCR recently published the latest figures for asylum applications filed by refugees from Ukraine in the respective country [1]:
DE = 1,114,070 on 11 October 2023
AT = 80,365 on 6 November 2023
CH = 66,065 on 22 September 2023
Today we’ll take a closer look at Switzerland:
A basic distinction is made between the permanent Ukrainian resident population, whose absolute number increased only slightly with 454 people [2] between 30 September 2021 and 30 September 2023, and Ukrainian refugees who have received the so-called S protection status in Switzerland. The latter are not recorded in the foreigner statistics, but in the asylum statistics [3]. The first information on Ukrainians with protection status S can be found for the end of June 2022 with 54,599 people [3]. The latest statistics from 30 September 2023 already show 64,163 Ukrainian refugees with temporary protection status [3] and thus show an increase of further 9,564 people since June 2022. This corresponds to an increase of 17.5% – and the trend is rising.
Since last year, we have been actively committed to ensuring that Ukrainian broadcasters can reach and provide their Ukrainian citizens in the diaspora with news and information from their homeland. In Germany, several operators already offer Ukrainian TV channels and today we are very pleased that we have managed to organize the distribution of ESPRESO TV in Swisscom’s free TV offering. This means that ESPRESO TV is available in 1.36 million Swiss TV households since 29 November 2023.
ESPRESO TV is an Ukrainian news channel that first went on air 10 years ago. Its basic journalistic principles include accuracy, reliability, impartiality, completeness, efficiency and balance in information reporting. In addition to news and analyzes of daily events as well as culture and sports, the programme includes talk shows and shows on the subject of business. ESPRESO TV is one of the most popular Ukrainian TV channels in the home country and abroad. The channel helps Ukrainians abroad to stay up to date with current events in Ukraine, but also to preserve the language, culture and traditions.
In addition to ESPRESO TV, our channel portfolio also includes the Ukrainian general entertainment channel 1+1 International and the Ukrainian news channel FREEDOM. We can also offer you the news channel OstWest24 produced in Berlin, which broadcasts news in Russian and Ukrainian for Russians and Ukrainians living abroad.
